    The fact is, that the deaths involve mostly people that do not have prescriptions for the drug. After factoring in the illegal fentanyl deaths, the heroin deaths, the cocaine deaths, that leaves just a fraction of the deaths involving prescription patients. Of the 49,000 opioid deaths in 2016, it turns out that only 2,400 were actually from a patient with prescriptions. And, most of those were not the people that actually held the prescription. This hype is affecting those patients that truly need the pain relievers. Doctor’s facing government pressure are afraid to prescribe the medicine, so the patient is the one that suffers because of this flawed research.
